Dick Creasey is already setting his Wisbech Town players targets for next season – despite still having two games to play of their current campaign.

The Fenmen extended their fantastic run of recent form to five straight wins over the Easter period thanks to a 3-1 win at Sleaford Town on Good Friday followed by a superb 7-2 success over fierce rivals Holbeach United yesterday.

Those two victories have allowed Creasey’s men to move six points clear of Holbeach in sixth and reduce the gap on fifth-placed Eynesbury Rovers to four points – but the Wisbech boss has admitted he has a bigger target in mind for next season.

“I had said before that we had to break into the top six and we’ve done that now so I think we’ll have to set the benchmark a little higher now,” he said.

“We’re going to look at the top three for next season. That’s not going to be easy but it’s really important with the new set-up that’s coming about in the season after next.

“It’s important that we’re in and around there so we can try to gain promotion. It’s important to the club and it has been put to me by the chairman that that’s where we want to be.”

Wisbech added a 22nd win of the season on Friday courtesy of goals from Michael Frew, Luke Wilson and Billy Smith, and Smith starred again yesterday afternoon with a hat-trick in the Fenmen’s nine-goal thriller.

Frew added another two goals and Luke Wilson and goalkeeper Sam Vince rounded off one of Wisbech’s finest wins of the season.

“Everybody will say that Holbeach came here weak, and they probably did, but we can’t pick their team for them,” Creasey said.

“All we can do is make sure that we do our job properly and that was the big thing I put over to the players.

“I thought we kept our nerve and kept our temperament right and didn’t get involved in anything so I have to give a lot of credit to the boys for that.

“We sent our fans home happy and if that’s against a weak Holbeach side then so be it.

“We’re delighted and we keep our little run going and the little targets we set ourselves five our six weeks ago is on course with two games to go.”

Wisbech’s big win proved to be somewhat of a celebration for Creasey, who announced he is to stay on at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium for the 2017/18 season on Friday evening.

Speculation had been growing as to whether this season would be his last in the managerial hot seat, but Creasey says that he will use next season to try and repay the club’s staff and supporters for their loyalty.

“I needed to make sure it was right because at my ripe old age of 48 plus, there are lots of things I could be doing on a Saturday afternoon,” he said.

“I still feel I need to repay a few people within the club. Not in terms of money, in terms of if can we be successful.

“We’ve talked about our gates being down this season but we’ve got the best supporters in the league without a shadow of a doubt.

“It’s going to be a hard summer for me – a short one because by the time we finish and by the time we come back in is not a long period.

“It’s going to be intense because I’ve got to make sure that the people I bring in to the club and the people I keep at the club are 100 per cent behind what the club want to achieve.

“I can only thank the club and the chairman for asking me to stay. It’s probably not to everyone’s liking and I apologise if I can’t please everyone but we are looking to have a season where we can achieve something.”

Wisbech travel to Northampton Sileby Rangers for their penultimate UCL Premier Division fixture on Saturday (3pm).
