It’s not often that two opposing managers are in total agreement at the end of a game, but that was the case last Saturday following a local derby between Wisbech St Mary and March Town United.
The Hares were held to a 2-2 by the Saints with both bosses left content with a point apiece, admitting that neither side really did enough to take all three points from the Thurlow Nunn League First Division clash.
Casey Logan’s penalty midway through the first half saw March take a 1-0 lead at Beechings Close, but the Hares squandered their promising start and were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
Mel Mattless’ side needed a late strike from substitute Adam Conyard to rescue a point from the fixture, after goals from Jack Mockford and Dale Parnell saw the Saints come behind to take the lead.
Mattless said: “I thought a point was about right. We were the better side in the first half and then they had the stronger second half.
“The boys did well in appalling conditions. The pitch was heavy and the wind and rain made it difficult to play.
“Having been ahead you would have liked to take all three points, but we would have taken a point beforehand.”
Mattless’ thoughts on the derby were shared by his opposite number in the Wisbech St Mary dugout.
“I thought on reflection that a draw was a fair result,” said Saints boss Arran Duke. “March were the better side in the first half but the reaction from by lads, after going behind, was very pleasing.
“After half-time, we played with more urgency and took control of things. It was disappointing to concede a late equaliser but it’s still an important point.”
Saints are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Needham Market Reserves (3pm) in a league clash. They also hit the road on Tuesday for a First Division KO Cup quarter-final at Debenham LC, 7.45pm.
March are without a league fixture this weekend, but also feature in the First Division KO Cup in midweek. They entertain Norwich United Reserves in a last-eight clash at the GER on Tuesday, 7.45pm.
