Wisbech St Mary are on an early season roll – and boss Arran Duke is hoping it can continue this weekend.
The Saints, who take on Leiston Reserves this Saturday (3pm), chalked up their third straight Thurlow Nunn Division One success at the weekend with a commanding 3-1 victory over AFC Sudbury Reserves.
Goals from captain Nick Davey, Jack Friend – his sixth in four games - and Tom Chilton fired St Mary to all three points at the ABC Quality Meats Stadium, and Duke says he is delighted with the form his men have displayed so far.
“It was really pleasing to pick up another win against good opposition,” he said.
“We struggled to cope with Sudbury in the first half; their energy and movement was good and we just didn’t get going but we went in at half-time 2-1 up after being a goal down.
“At half time we talked about what was needed and the reaction from the lads in the second half was spot on. We played some very nice stuff and got the goal to go 3-1 up.
“It’s another three points and we can see the confidence in the squad after three wins on the spin.”
The Saints, who are now joint-top of the league standings with three other sides after their hat-trick of wins, face a Leiston side who have experienced an underwhelming start to their league campaign.
The Suffolk outfit hammered Cornard United 4-1 on the opening day of the season before losing 2-1 to Debenham LC and drawing 1-1 at March Town last weekend, but Duke is under no illusions as to the test his side face on Saturday afternoon.
“We go to Leiston knowing we have to keep our standards high if we are to get anything from the game,” he said.
“We’re looking forward to getting out on the pitch again and looking to continue our good form.”
The Saints will be without Jack Mockford, who will serve a suspension after he was sent off against AFC Sudbury.
