Wisbech Town boss Dick Creasey has snapped up a player who cost his team victory on Wednesday night.

The Fenmen were held to a 2-2 draw at struggling Boston Town in their latest United Counties League Premier Division fixture after allowing a two-goal half-time cushion - provided by Michael Frew and Edgaras Buzas - to slip through their grasp in the second period.

But the man who scored the home side’s late leveller - Alex Beck - is now a Wisbech player.

The prolific striker, a standing dish at Step 5 level for many years, has agreed a switch to bolster the Fenmen’s attacking options. And manager Creasey is delighted to have got his man - even though he cost him a couple of valuable points in midweek!

“Alex is one of the best and most consistent goalscorers in the UCL,” said Creasey.

“I don’t want to put the lad under pressure before he has even kicked a ball for us, but he is a proven 20-goal-a-season man and that is something we have lacked in our squad.

“Had Alex been playing for us on Wednesday night, we would have comfortably won the game at Boston Town as he would have put away plenty of our chances that went begging.

“Instead we came away with a draw that felt more like a defeat, rather than the confidence-boosting win it should have been.”

Beck is not the only new face at Wisbech after goalkeeper Sam Vince and midfielder Liam Fryatt made their Fenmen debuts in midweek.

Vince has arrived on a dual registration deal from higher-level Spalding United.

His father, Nigel, also played for Creasey in the past.

Vince was snapped up after previous number one, Ricky Lovelace, departed earlier in the week. That exit was by ‘mutual agreement’ according to Creasey.

Lovelace was at fault for a couple of goals in a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of high-flying Desborough Town last Saturday.

Jon Fairweather and Billy Smith hit Wisbech’s goals in that loss.

Meanwhile Fryatt has stepped down a couple of rungs on the non-league ladder after being at King’s Lynn Town.

He filled in at right-back for Wisbech on Wednesday and conceded the penalty which launched Boston Town’s comeback in the second half.

A hectic spell for Wisbech continues with two away tests in the space of four days against teams battling at opposite ends of the Premier Division table.

Beck will make his debut when Creasey takes his side to lowly, but improving, Cogenhoe tomorrow before they face former boss Brett Whaley’s Yaxley outfit on Tuesday.

Yaxley have reeled off six successive league wins to climb into the top six.
