JAMES NAPIER has been named Wisbech Rugby Club's first team player of the year.

The winger received the accolade at the club's annual players' awards dinner on Maundy Thursday.

It was presented by captain Tom Long who spoke of the club's target of promotion next season.

Wisbech finished third in the London North East Division Three this term.

The league is considered to be the highest the club have played in.

Greg Brownlow was named most improved player of the year and Will Pettit received the players' player of the year award.

For the second team Jack Malkin was named player of the year and Elliot Peck, most improved player.

The chairman's award went to Suzanne England for her work as treasurer over the year.

Clubman of the year was awarded to Andy Heighton for his efforts as second team captain over the past three years.

Chairman John Claydon announced plans to improve facilities to continue to the expansion of the club.

He also thanked committee members and there was particular praise for Ben Harrington for the organisation of the annual golf day, Steve Drawbridge for his coaching and backroom work and Dave Dobson for his organisation of the fixtures and match day referees.

Secretary Kate Bennett was presented with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her efforts and the unstinting input of the bar personnel who maintain the lifeblood of the club was applauded.

Wisbech travel to Billericay for the last league game of the season on Saturday whilst the second team take on Norwich at Harecroft Road.
