Wisbech Town have secured the signatures of two new players ahead of their mission for United Counties glory next season.

23-year-old former Fenmen midfielder Sam Murphy returns to the club after a four year absence following his move from Step 4 club, Spalding United.

Murphy, who previously spent three seasons at Peterborough Northern Star before signing for Spalding, was due to sign for Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division side Stamford AFC this summer, but couldn’t put pen to paper due to work commitments.

Wisbech boss Dick Creasey, who has now made four signings this summer, says he has been an admirer of Murphy’s for some time.

“Sam’s been someone that I’ve been chasing for a long time,” Creasey said.

“He’s been playing a higher level with Spalding but unfortunately he couldn’t commit to Stamford because of the travelling and somebody’s loss is always somebody else’s gain.

“We wanted him in not only because of his footballing ability but because he’s a Wisbech boy.”

The Fenmen have also swooped for former Boston United starlet, Harry Limb.

The forward was tipped to break into the Pilgrims’ first team after impressing manager Dennis Greene, who asked him to sign first team forms on his 16th birthday in August last year.

However, Limb was immediately dual-registered with Holbeach United in the UCL and later signed for Evo-Stik NPL Division One South side Loughborough Dynamo.

“Harry’s a young, up-and-coming talent who was doing well in the youth sector at Boston,” Creasey said.

“He was told he could break into the first team but that never happened for whatever reason and we moved quickly to bring the lad in.

“He’s a young lad and has still got a lot to learn but is a good addition to the squad.”

Murphy and Limb join Jack Friend and Ricky Lovelace in arriving at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium, and Creasey is pleased to see his squad include a growing number of local lads.

He said: “We’ve brought two Wisbech boys in now – Sam and Jack – which is really good for the club.

“With players like Paul Cousins and Stuart Cobb staying we’ve got a real local core to the squad, but the most important thing is that they’re good quality players, too.”

The Wisbech boss also admitted he is looking to bring in more new recruits before their UCL campaign kicks off on August 6.

“It’s not over yet,” Creasey said. “We’ll hopefully bring another two or three in; we’ve got offers in at other clubs and here for players we want to stay on.

“We haven’t got any points yet; it’s all about preparing for next season and getting back in training.

“We’ll get back in training in three weeks and then there’ll be five weeks of hard work, including a few games, to get ready for the start of the season.”
