Wisbech Town manager Gary Setchell admitted his side let themselves down last Saturday.

The Fenmen slumped to a 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Tadcaster Albion in Division One East of the Northern Premier League.

Michael Frew did fire Wisbech level during the first half but they fell behind for a second time on the stroke of half-time – and two further goals from the visitors then sealed the points in the second period.

“I always try to be as honest as I can when talking about my team,” said Setchell. “And that is first time I have felt let down after a home game since coming back to the club just over a year ago.

“We were devoid of energy, we didn’t even compete and we made Tadcaster look like Brazil.

“There was no fire in our bellies and we paid the price for it. We can’t just turn up and expect to get results at this level of football.

“The fact we’re stuffed out of the way in terms of geography and we don’t have a very big budget make it hard for us to attract players.

“We have to work for every single point and we just let three of them disappear off down the road.

“We gave away some awful goals and Tadcaster could have had two or three more as well in all honesty.

“Their first one came after a great initial save from my goalkeeper and the second was scored seven seconds after we had the ball in their box. How that happened, I have absolutely no idea!

“The third was a set piece and then we got opened up like a tin of peas for the fourth. We defended awfully as a team.

“We need to play on the front foot, we need to play at a high tempo and that just didn’t happen.

“We have a good bunch of lads but only one or two of them performed to anything like the levels I expect of them.”

Setchell expects better from his side when they hit the FA Trophy trail this Saturday.

The Fenmen entertain Kidsgrove Athletic in a preliminary round tie at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium, 3pm.

The clash against Kidsgrove, who sit ninth in Division One West, is worth £3,000 to the winners.
