MEMBERS of March Town Cricket Club gave their pavilion a face lift ready for the new season, in an operation described as "Groundforce meets Changing Rooms."

Despite the absence of Charlie Dimmock or Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen from those famous television shows, everyone was kitted out in a special "Cricketforce" tee-shirt, and gave the ground a great revamp, working on everything from the pavilion windows to the score box, the benches, and the ditches.

The work was carried out as part of the English Cricket Board's countrywide pre season initiative called Natwest Cricketforce.

The new season starts on April 12.

Twenty-five club members volunteered for the day, helping to maintain the ground, considered by many as one of the best in the county.

Club Chairman Les Mills said: "'It was great to see so many club members volunteering to help out with the numerous jobs that require completion prior to the start of every new season.

"Our thanks go to Ridgeons Timber and Builder Merchants from March for their continued support with this initiative."

The club are also pleased to announce the appointment of a new part-time groundsman, Phil Goodfellow.

Goodfellow has played for the club's second team as a bowler for several years.

He is a fully qualified groundsman and is well known locally as a former assistant green keeper at March Golf Club.

Mills said: "The club are very pleased to secure Phil's services. He is taking on one of the most important jobs within any cricket club.

"We would also like to thank our retiring groundsman Mel Pooley for his many years of hard work and commitment.

"Mel, of course, is our new club president, and continues as the Cambridgeshire English Cricket Board pitch advisor, and will no doubt keep an eye on the square to ensure we maintain our high standards.
