LAST Sunday saw a practise match take place on the Wide Welland near Spalding and this Sunday the venue will be used for the third round of the King of the Fens.
Wisbech angler Bob Bates came out on top last Sunday with four eels and some roach and skimmer for a winning total of 8-4.
Manea Angling Club travelled to Ely to fish the River Ouse and Mark Dunham won with 8-5, including a 4lb tench.
Over at Tydd Gote the North Level Drain at the Main Road Bridge sees plenty of action this time of year with two evening matches and a Sunday match.
Hans Schuman won one of the evening matches, a week last Tuesday, with one tench, one eel and some perch and skimmers in his winning weight of 12-10.
Then a week last Thursday Sammy McSpadden took top spot with four bream for a total of 21-4. I came second with 14-12 which included the biggest bream I have ever caught and weighed in at 8-2.
Then on Sunday Ray Groom won with 9-4 of small roach and skimmers.
Syd Starr had a good day on the Twenty Foot Drain last Saturday at Shepperson Bridge where he landed nine tench to 6lb and four bream to 5lb.
Elsewhere, the Old Nene above the Bypass Bridge is worth a visit as it is full skimmer bream at the moment.
Last Tuesday Daniel Hall and myself fished the Old Nene at Staffords Bridge and caught tench and skimmers steadily all day. Here you can park behind your peg and get a day ticket on the bank.
On the lakes Steve Smalley won on Jay Lake last Sunday in the Mill View match with 50lb of small carp to 1lb. Martin Kirk came a close second with 49lb.
At Decoy the Saturday open was fished on the Beastie Lake where Martin Freeman needed 141lb for top spot.
The following day, Roy Wells took top spot on Lous Lake with 104lb.
Just down the road at East Delph, Wisbech angler Dave Pearce jnr took top spot with 77-4.
At Highflyers Lake last Saturday John Buckingham won with 189lb and the following day Steve Norman came top with 225lb. March angler Paul Ringham was second with his first ever 200lb-plus net of carp. Paul ended the match with 206lb of carp to 8lb.
Townsend Angling Club travelled to Waterbeach last Sunday to fish Magpie Lake and Matt Rust won with 51-8. Most of his fish were caught up in the water.
This week's fixtures see Manea on the Old Bedford River at Welches Dam, with a 7am draw, Mill View at Decoy Lakes with a 8.30am draw and the March club are fishing the King of the Fens on the Welland at Spalding with an 8.30am draw.
On July 26 Tydd Gote Angling Club are running a junior match on the North Level Drain. There are different age groups and anyone up to the age of 16 can fish. To book, ring Dave Parlett on 01945 463913.
Finally, the pool at Fields End was busy last weekend. On Saturday Paul Rayner needed 50lb to win the Black Bull match. On Sunday Willie Marshall won the Leverington club match with 59-8. Last Tuesday Bill Woodhard won the senior citizen's match also with 59-8.
