Mel Mattless has labelled March Town United’s win over Downham Town as “the perfect start to 2018” as the Hares eye up completing back-to-back victories this weekend.

Jack Brand and Michael Chow netted for Mattless’ side, to secure a confidence boosting three points against an experienced Downham outfit.

Now the GER Sports Ground‎ chief is calling on his side to build on the victory, when they play host to Norwich United Reserves on Saturday (kick off 3.00pm).

“Last Saturday counts for nothing if we don’t follow it up with a good performance on Saturday,” Mattless told the Cambs Times.

“We did really well to get 2-0 up at Downham, who have been on a really good run and had a great win over league leaders Swaffham on Boxing Day.

“They got a goal back with ten minutes to play and then pushed hard for an equaliser but I thought we defended really solidly to see out the game.

“It was an important three points for us after a frustrating Christmas period, it was the perfect start to 2018 and gives us something to build on as we look to climb the table.

“Norwich United Reserves will be a different test and like most reserve sides in this League, you can’t judge what you are coming up against because the sides change depending on the players they have available.

“We know it won’t be an easy game but we will go into it confident after the win at Downham and looking to push on.”

Victory for the Hares this weekend, could see them climb to 11th in the First Division standings and would give March back-to-back league wins for just the second time this season.

Mattless is confident of having a settled squad for this weekend’s fixture, something which he admits he hasn’t had as much as he would have liked so far this season.

He said: “I think Saturday will be the first time since the start of the season we will go into the game with pretty much the same squad we had the week before.

“I know everyone has injuries but we have been hit hard this year and it makes life difficult when you have to keep changing things up.

“I am hoping the squad will start to settle over the second-half of the season.”
