LOUISE HAZEL is targeting a lifetime's best performance when she competes in her first World Championships in Berlin this weekend.

Hazel, 23, from March has already achieved her season's objective by making the Great Britain squad for the event and will be competing tomorrow and Sunday.

She achieved the B qualifying standard in her first heptathlon of the year, setting a personal best of 6,043 points at the Erdgas Combined Events Meeting in Ratingen, Germany, in June.

Speaking from a training camp in Portugal, Hazel said: "I just want to make sure I get as much out of it and use it as experience for London in 2012.

"Getting to the World Championships was massive for me. I want to make sure I perform well and get as many PBs as I can.

"It is going to be a great experience but I also want to make sure I put down some good performances with the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships on the horizon."

The World Championships will be shown live on BBC Two and much media attention has focused on Hazel's fellow British heptathlete Jessica Ennis, who has been widely tipped to win a gold medal.

Hazel, who competed at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg, said: "I'm just happy to be in Berlin and soaking up the atmosphere of a major championship.

"I know there is going to be a lot of media attention surrounding Jess and that she is a big medal hope for us and for me.

"Jess and I have known each other and have competed against each other since we were 14 so there is a good bit of banter between us and we will help each other out.

"Hopefully there won't be too many low points but in a heptathlon there are always parts where you might be struggling and if we can help each other then great.

"I will definitely be nervous but it won't bother me if there is more attention surrounding our event because of Jess."
