A DRAMATIC weekend's racing in Spain saw Wisbech driver Liam McMillan pick up an impressive sixth place and get knocked off the track and spin backwards towards a gravel trap at more than 100mph.

The 18-year-old came from 28th and last on the grid to finish sixth in the first ever round of the SEAT Leon EuroCup in Valencia on Saturday.

The following day McMillan started the second round in third and moved up to second but was hit from behind by Antonio Aristi in the sprint to the first corner and sent spinning off the track.

McMillan's Leon Cupra spun sideways across the track and then backwards into the gravel trap.

All 26 rapidly approaching cars miraculously missed him and he walked from his car unharmed.

McMillan said: "It was really annoying because in testing I'd been two seconds a lap quicker than Eoin Murray, who started from pole and won Race 2.

"He'd got to know the Valencia circuit a lot better since then, but I know I still had a very good chance to win that race."

McMillan's race weekend got off to the worst possible start when the power steering pump failed at the beginning of qualifying. This meant he could only do the required three laps to get his car into the race.

Divine intervention was needed if McMillan was to score a good result in Saturday's opening race - and it came in the form of a torrential downpour of rain, which suddenly arrived after three laps.

McMillan was near the end of the 2.5 mile lap when the rain started and was one of the first drivers to pit for wet tyres.

With drivers struggling to keep their cars on the wet track, McMillan made the most of his advantage and drove superbly around the 120,000 spectator capacity MotoGP track to finish sixth.

McMillan will return to Spain for Rounds 3 and 4 of the SEAT Leon Supercopa, which take place at the former Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit at Jerez on June 7-8.
