Wisbech athletics ace Lewis Shipley was crowned national 800m champion after storming to success in the final of the IAPS National Athletics Championships.

The youngster travelled to Birmingham along side fellow Wisbech Grammar School sprinter Abby Piccaver for the national championships, and Shipley finished in third in the 100m final before grabbing gold in the 800m with a time of two minutes and 14.58 seconds.

Abby came fourth in her 200m heat which meant she narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final.

Phil Webb, director of sport at Wisbech Grammar School, said: “It is a terrific achievement to even reach the IAPS National Athletics Championships and we are extremely proud of both Lewis and Abby’s hard work during this athletics season.

“I am over the moon for Lewis, who broke his own school record as well as taking the title of fastest U13 boy in the country at the 800m.”
