WORLD karting champion Benjy Russell was awarded a trophy and shield for winning the British championship.

The 21-year-old from Tydd St Giles received the awards at a presentation evening at the Hilton Hotel, Coventry on Saturday.

Russell won the British championship for the second time last year, having won in juniors in 2001.

Russell is the first ever Brit to win at the world finals and received the world title in Dubai at the end of last year.

He said: "I am obviously delighted with my performance in 2007 - it's been a fantastic year.

"I must thank my team, Strawberry Racing, for their technical support, Steve Ogden for supplying reliable engines and a special thanks to my mum and dad who have supported me throughout my karting life."

The evening was organised by Super 1, who were celebrating their 25th anniversary as promoters of the British Championship.

Russell now plans to compete in the European Championships which will be held over four rounds in France, Czech Republic, Germany and Belgium.

He will defend his world crown in December and intends to defend his British title, but needs a sponsor to provide financial support.

n Anyone wishing to sponsor Russell should contact his father, Steve, on 07810 515064.
