WISBECH Hockey Club have been cleared of any wrongdoing after allegations that the ladies second team unfairly strengthened their side for the relegation clash with Market Deeping.

Deeping claimed that Wisbech had dropped first team players into the seconds to help them win 1-0 in the Cambridgeshire Ladies Premier Division fixture on March 19.

But the league committee dismissed the allegation - ruling that the first team had played their usual, strongest side.

Stating their case to the committee the club said that the unbeaten first team were intent on winning the league “so there was absolutely no scope for them to weaken their team to advantage the second team”.

The second team, who finished third from bottom, will now face a nervous wait to see whether two or three teams will be relegated.

• Elsewhere, Long Sutton Ladies beat Cambridge Nomads 2-0 but missed out on promotion from Division Two North-West by just a point. Mel Ludlam and Lachan Read were the scorers.

There was also success for Wisbech Grammar School at a national hockey festival in Bath.

The school’s first team were beaten 6-3 by Exeter but bounced back in style to smash Westminster 7-1, Reading Blue Coat School 3-0 and Hereford Cathedral School 3-0.

Coach Dominic Garfoot said: “The boys must be congratulated for their efforts in the final weeks of term and during the festival weekend.

“They have recorded some very pleasing wins against some larger schools, while playing a fluent and high tempo game.”
