WISBECH Ladies’ first team maintained their scintillating start to the season with two excellent victories last weekend. Elsewhere the men’s second team won their derby at March while the fourth XI drew against March’s third team.

East Women’s Hockey League - Division One North

Wisbech 3 Saffron Walden 0

TABLE-topping Wisbech made it seven wins out of seven with a deserved victory. Claire Apted gave Wisbech the lead and she added her second shortly after following good work from Erika Burrel. Joey Gomm made the game safe with a reverse stick shot.

Women’s Trophy Second Round

Wisbech 8 St Ives 1

A CONFIDENT Wisbech side thrashed St Ives who were only able to field 10 players. The hosts raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from Erika Burrell, debutant Roma Coates and Lisa Williamson. St Ives pulled one back but the unbeaten home side powered in five more goals. A hat-trick from Georgie Dunn and goals from Sue Slator and Joey Gomm clinched another victory.

Cambridge Nomads 1 Wisbech 4

WISBECH moved up to third after a comfortable win at Cambridge that could have been greater had they taken more of their chances. Goals from Brad Apted, Karle Belding, David Wood and young talent David Wood secured the victory.

East Men’s Hockey League - Division Three North-West

Wisbech III 1 Rutland 4

TOP of the league Rutland were matched for long periods by a Wisbech side who threatened to cause an upset throughout. Sam Portham gave the hosts an early lead which captain Dom Stannard nearly doubled but eventually Rutland stamped their authority on the game to win. Man of the match Shaun Claxton and Ivan Burgess were excellent in defence.

East Men’s Hockey League - Division Five North-West

Wisbech IV 1 March III 1

MARCH came flying out of the blocks in a thrilling end-to-end encounter and took the lead through Stuart Fox. Jonathan Boyall equalised after the break and both ‘keepers made great saves to ensure both sides took a share of the points.
