MONDAY, June 16 is almost upon us, and for those who don't fish the lakes, it is the start of your river fishing season.

The rivers have looked fine over the last few days. The rain last week gave them a clean out. The Old Nene has plenty of colour and should fish well all the way through. The section above the bypass bridge should produce plenty of bream and tench and the creek cottage section is well worth a visit.

The Twenty Foot Drain at Sheppersons Bridge and Chain Bridge are very good bream and tench areas, as is the Sixteen Foot at Cottens Corner.

All the waters mentioned are controlled by the March and District AA, whose books are on sale in local tackle shops.

Another good section is the Old Nene at Reed Fen. This stretch contains a large head of bream and to fish it you have to be a member of Reed Fen Club, whose books are on sale at Mill View Tackle.

Most of the drains around the area fish well for bream and tench and the Forty Foot Drain, Middle Level Drain and North Bank of the Nene along the North Level at Tydd are all worth a visit.

A week last Thursday the evening open match at Fields End Water fished on the pool was won by Lee Thorton, who used paste as hook bait and landed carp to 3lb in his winning weight of 62lb. Graham Dean was second with 44lb and I was third with 42lb.

In the open match on Saturday, Pete Goodman came out on top with 84-1, Adrain Hunter was second with 77lb and Hans Schuman was third with 75-8.

Last Sunday it was the turn of Queens Angling Club to fish the pool and out in front with 43-8 was Barry Goldsmith. Second place went to John Watts, with 35-4 and Dave Reeve was third with 22-12.

Mill View Angling Club fished the Silver Fish Lake at Kingsland last Sunday and Tony Taylor set a new match record for the lake with 185-4 of chub and tench. Tony fished up the water all day and needed five nets to keep his catch in. Alex bates was second with 113-12 and Paul Irons was third with 66-4.

This Sunday Mill View will be fishing on Yew Lake at Decoy. Draw time is 8.30am.

Townsend Angling Club will be fishing the channels at Willcroft Fishery this Sunday. Draw time is 8am with fishing from 9am-3pm.

Over at Buttonhole Lake, last Tuesday's open match was won by Kevin Addison with 45-14. Pushing him all the way was Richard Button with 44-13 and Lester Pratt was third with 34-8.

Over at Decoy, Saturday's open on the Beastie was won by Tony Dawson with 151lb. Robert Edmunson was second with 129lb and Ian Chesney was third with 121lb.

Then on Sunday, fishing the same lake, Chris Barley took top spot with 100lb, pushing Saturday's winner into second place with 99lb and Ted Sargent was third with 97lb.

Over at High Flyers Lake Jonny Smalley won the Tuesday open with 107lb, on Saturday top spot went to John Buckingham with 140lb and Kenny Gammon won on Sunday with 109lb.

Ian Firth won on the East Delph Big Lake on Sunday with 113lb and on lake two Dave Pearce jnr took top spot with 100-8.

Finally, this Tuesday coming sees the senior citizens in action on the pool at Fields End. Draw time is 8.30am.
