STEVE Taylor revealed today that the level of personal abuse he received from fans and his inability to attract players to Wisbech Town were the factors that caused him to quit as manager.

Taylor resigned on Sunday evening, a day after Wisbech suffered a 3-0 home defeat against Harwich and Parkeston, who were the Ridgeons Premier Division's bottom club prior to the match.

He said: "The abuse I've received from some of the fans has been completely out of order.

"One fan spat at me at a recent home game and some of the abuse I've received on the fans' forum on the club website has been very personal, and I'm not prepared to accept it any longer.

"I've given a lot of time and effort to Wisbech Town but some fans have had it in for me from the start.

"There are many good fans at the club and I have no problem with the players or the board - we did the best we could with the resources available to us, so I apologise to anyone who feels I've let the club down."

Taylor said that the ground sharing arrangements at Outwell hampered him from signing new players and 15 potential signings had refused to join the club because of this.

He said: "Players have been put off because the training facilities are not as good as they should be and they prefer to play for clubs with an established ground."

Taylor said of Saturday's game: He said: "The result had nothing to do with my decision to quit.

"I had seven players unavailable and the squad was fully stretched. I had a couple of people playing who were not fully fit and I know that Harwich have made several signings recently. They won't be at the bottom of the table for long.

"We've had some decent results this season but it's natural that we will struggle when the squad is stretched and I'm unable to recruit the players I want.
