FROM title-winning performances to thumping defeats, our pictures tell the story of a fantastic year of sporting action in and around Wisbech.

Wisbech Town have had an exciting 12 months, with the club moving forward under Steve Appleby. As well as reaching their first cup final for nine years, the Fenmen have moved into a new stadium and are preparing to climb the Ridgeons Premier Division in the new year.

Wisbech was inspired by Paralympic gold medalist Jody Cundy who was given the Freedom of the town in May in recognition of his remarkable personal journey from disabled young boy to athletic superstar.

The area’s rugby sides continue to impress and Wisbech Rugby Club’s first team will be hoping to come out fighting in the new year as they face the threat of a 13-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.

It was an incredible year in the pool for Wisbech’s swimmers and the town’s hockey sides are continuing to challenge in their leagues - with the unbeaten Wisbech Ladies’ first team topping their East Women’s League Division One-North.

Wisbech Cricket Club’s first team finished a stunning second in the Tucker Gardner First Division and 12-year-old karting sensation George Russell typified the talent of the region’s young sporting stars by netting a hat-trick of British titles in a magical year.
