SNOOKER superstar Joe Perry got the ball rolling in a 24-hour pool marathon in March.

The event was organised by players who represent the Royal British Legion in the Cherry and Automatics March and District Pool League, to raise money for local charities.

Other events held during the day included a barbecue, numerous stalls, a quiz and sumo wrestling.

A total of 80 people turned up to support the event along with 14 members of the Legion pool club.

The event, at the March Royal British Legion, began with a game between Joe Perry and club veteran George Jupp, 86.

Joe then played a game against every member of the Legion pool team before the team were challenged by members of the public.

Under event rules at least one Legion pool player had to be playing at a time during the 24-hours.

In total 3,000 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support and the March Royal British Legion.

Paul Larham, 32, one of the events organisers said: "It was a huge surprise to raise as much money as we did. We have held the event before but only managed to raise 1,600.

"Joe stayed for an hour and a half. We are grateful for their support."

Mr Larham added: "The first 12 hours were straight forward, but after it started getting dark that's when the tiredness really kicked in.

"The last six hours were the worst - that's when the eyes started to get heavy."

The club are now thinking of making this a bi-annual event.
