WISBECH Town Cricket Club are holding a family fun day to encourage junior players to join the club.

The event takes place at Harecroft Road Pavilion on Saturday, April 12 from 1.30pm.

The club is aiming to sign players between the ages of seven and 15.

They currently run six junior boys' sides and are looking to start up a girls' team.

Dominic Stannard, youth development officer for Wisbech Town Cricket Club, said: "It will be a great opportunity for families to come and meet the players, coaches and people involved with the club and to see what we're all about.

"People can join in practise sessions and there will also be a 20/20 challenge match involving some of Wisbech's top players, including Cambridgeshire captain Gary Freear.

"Gary started playing cricket for Wisbech when he was 13 and now, at the age of 26, he is the county captain. Having him there sends out a really positive message to the youngsters because it shows them what they can go on to achieve. We are hoping to find some Gary Freears of the future at this fun day."

There will be a variety of activities and stalls taking place during the day.

Refreshments will be available on a barbecue, tuck shop, cake stall and bar.

There will also be a disco and karaoke in the evening which starts at 7pm and ends at midnight.

Mr Stanndard said: "We are sending eight coaches on courses and applying for funding so we can provide better facilities and equipment, so there has never been a better time to join Wisbech Cricket Club."
