A FORMER Wisbech Town hero came back to haunt the Fenmen on Tuesday evening.

Striker Liam Harrold returned to Fenland Park and his goal and assist guided his new club Mildenhall Town to a 3-2 victory that maintains their position at the top of the Ridgeons Premier League.

But it was not just Harrold who tormented Wisbech. Fenmen boss Dick Creasey was once again left fuming with the officials and believes that Mildenhall should have had a player sent off.

Harrold's spectacular overhead kick from six yards gave the visitors the lead in the second minute and Andy Eady made it 2-0 after 20 minutes with a thumping header from a corner.

Minutes later, Craig Hammond converted Harrold's low cross to give the league leaders a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

Wisbech improved in the second half and Matt Oswin struck soon after the break to give the visitors hope.

Liam Nimmo, Darren Jimson and Stuart Cobb were all denied by good defending and saves from Mildenhall keeper Ben Nower.

The Fenmen set up a tense finish when Luke Kennedy scored from the penalty spot five minutes from time but it proved to be too little too late.

Creasey said: "We were terrible in the first 20 minutes and we were made to pay. We got back into the game and we were hammering them in the second half but it was not to be.

"We had two massive shouts for penalties. Martin McNeil had a header just before half time which was clearly handled by a defender.

"It should have been a penalty and the defender should have been sent off. Instead the referee ignored the shouts and booked Martin for dissent."

He added: "It says it all when we are applauded off the pitch at the end of the game and the referee is booed.

"Steve Appleby was booked for the first time in ages and after the game he told me that he will be glad when he hangs up his boots because officials are ruining the modern game."

Creasey said: "But we have to accept the result. You can't give the league leaders a 3-0 lead and expect to get anything from the game.

"I went crackers at half time and the players responded. We have to take that same attitude forward into the next match."

Creasey admitted that he needed a goal-scorer like Harrold on Saturday, when Wisbech squandered goal-scoring chances before drawing 1-1 at home to Kirkley.

Liam Nimmo's opener on the stroke of half time was cancelled out by Chris Sillett's goal 20 minutes from time. It could have been much worse for Wisbech but Sillett missed a penalty five minutes later.

Wisbech face a tough match at Wroxham tomorrow (Saturday). Wroxham have lost just one league game this season and the Fenmen have fresh injury worries.

Andy Lodge has suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the game while Adam Weston is also likely to miss the game with a back injury. However, Danny Hussey will return to the squad.

* THE transfer of Stamford midfielder Scott Musgrove to Wisbech has collapsed.

Creasey had hoped to sign the 21-year-old this week but the Fenmen manager admitted: "The move fell through at the last minute.
