NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Duke hopeful Wisbech St Mary can kick on after midweek cup win
Arran Duke hopes Wisbech St Mary’s midweek cup win can push them on to a much-needed victory in the league this weekend.
The Saints snapped a five-match losing streak when beating Downham Town 3-1 in the League Challenge Cup on Tuesday night, and boss Duke is hopeful that performance can kick-start a winning run – starting with a victory over Swaffham Town in the Thurlow Nunn First Division tomorrow (3pm).
“I’m really pleased with the result in the performance that went with it,” Duke said.
“It’s a difficult period for us at the minute with injuries and suspensions but the players raised their levels and it paid off.
“Our goals came from Ben Coe and two from Jack Friend and new signing Joseph Simpson made his debut in goal for the club with a strong display.
“We go into tomorrow’s game against a side in fine form knowing again that we are going to be in for a tough game but if the lads show the desire that we showed in the cup then who knows.
“We are all working hard to get things right and to work through this tough spell and I’m certain a corner will be turned soon.”
Elsewhere, The Saints’ reserves needed the help of two if their substitutes – and extra time – to progress into the quarter-finals of the William Coad Intermediate Cup on Saturday.
Cottenham United held them to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes but St Mary netted twice in added time, with two of their goals coming from substitutes Ethan Goodale and Harley Hollis. Aaron Wright notched the other.
Wisbech St Mary will hope to add a second straight win in all competitions when they entertain Fenland rivals March Town Reserves in the Kershaw Senior B Division tomorrow (2pm).
The club’s ‘A’ team were also in Cambs League action. They lost 3-0 to high-flying Mepal Sports, who top the Mead Plant & Grab 2B Division. The A team go to third-placed Tuddenham 08 tomorrow.
