Jack Friend inspired Wisbech St Mary to a big win in the Hinchingbrooke Cup last night.
The former Peterborough United and Wisbech Town star netted four times as the Saints brushed higher-level Huntingdon United aside 5-1 with an impressive display.
Connor Pilbeam gave St Mary an early lead before Friend found the net four times in the second period to send Arran Duke’s men into the last four of the competition and to give them a second consecutive win in all competitions following their victory over King’s Lynn Town Reserves last Saturday.
“It was a nice win,” said Duke.
“It feels good to win two on the bounce.
“We reshuffled the squad a little and all the lads put in a good shift.
“We got the goal early on but never really got going after that.
“We were under the cosh a bit in the second half but the introduction of Robbie Harris breathed some new life into us and we played some good stuff after that.
“I’m very pleased for Jack and the lads overall as the game was a good opportunity for players who haven’t had much game time to start.
“They all threw their hats into the ring and now I have a few selection decisions to make which is a great position to be in going into a busy period of football.”
St Mary return to Thurlow Nunn Division One action tomorrow when they welcome Downham Town to Beechings Close (3pm), before hosting Woodbridge Town a fortnight later (28).
