Wisbech Town manager Dick Creasey says his side is right in title contention after two more wins saw them extend their winning run to nine on the bounce.

The Fenmen have climbed to second in the United Counties League. They are seven points behind leaders AFC Rushden & Diamonds, but have two games in hand.

On Saturday, Wisbech did all the damage in the first half in a 4-1 win at basement side Long Buckby. Adam Millson (2), Danny Beaumont and Tommy Treacher got the goals.

On Tuesday, Scott Johnson and Josh Ford were on target as Wisbech beat Deeping Rangers 2-1.

Creasey said: “We didn’t play great on Saturday but the score line on Tuesday flattered Deeping. It suggests a close encounter but we could have been four up at half time. We were worthy winners.

“We keep winning and keep clawing the gap back to AFC Rushden & Diamonds. Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, the lads have done really well.

“But we will keep fighting, we’ll keep our end up.”

Wisbech host Long Buckby tomorrow. Despite last weekend’s win, Creasey expects his side to face a stiff test.

He said: “Long Buckby are far from the worst side we’ve played this season. In the second half they caused us more problems than any other team in the past six or seven weeks. They’ve got good pace up top.”

Three days later, the Fenmen face a mouth-watering trip to title rivals Yaxley, who are only behind Wisbech on goal difference.

Creasey says: “Yaxley went two down to Thurnby (Nirvana) but fought back to win 3-2, which keeps them right in the title picture. We know it’s going to be a massive game.”

Creasey hopes to have a full squad to pick from for both games, although he admits there is a question mark hanging over Ford.

He said: “Josh has a tight hamstring so we have to assess that. With all the games we’ve got coming up, if there’s a slight doubt over him, we will not risk him.”
