Wisbech Town are three matches from title glory.

The flying Fenmen have become favourites to lift the Unitde Counties League Premier Division crown following a terrific run of away triumphs in recent days.

Gary Setchell’s men have reeled off three successive wins on the road – without conceding a goal – to close to within a point of long-time leaders Yaxley . . . and Wisbech still boast a game in hand. Third-placed Newport Pagnell are in the same position to Wisbech, but the Fenmen have a far superior goal difference.

The latest of Wisbech’s victories arrived at fourth-placed Holbeach last night (Wednesday) when defender Jamie Stevens scored the only goal against his former club in the 27th minute.

Billy Smith and Michael Frew both saw further efforts ruled out for offside in the second half of a fiercy clash as Wisbech also had to heavy pressure from their hosts.

Setchell said: “We had a horrible defeat at home to Newport Pagnell and our title rivals would probably have expected us to drop more points after that.

“But we have responded really well with three away wins in a row without conceding a goal.

“We dug out a 1-0 win at Leicester Nirvana last Tuesday, we went to Kirby Muxloe and won 2-0 last Saturday despite being really poor in the first half, and we then got a 1-0 win at Holbeach last night despite having our backs to the wall for long periods of the second half.

“They are a team who possess the best aerial power in the league. We really had to defend well and put bodies on the line. We also had that little bit of luck you always need.

“The fellas deserve a huge amount of credit for what they have done. We’re now three games away from winning the championship, but we have to remember that we are also only one slip-up away from losing it.”

A brace from leading scorer Alex Beck had done the trick for Wisbech at Kirby Muxloe last weekend.

Setchell’s men can take another step towards the title by beating lowly Oadby Town at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium this Saturday, 3pm.

They complete their campaign with two fixtures against Daventry Town – an away clash on Tuesday ahead of a May 5 finale on home turf.

Setchell added: “The pressure is really on now, but we’ve played under pressure for most of the season to get ourselves into this position.

“Hopefully we are now men enough to see the job through and hopefully the whole town can get behind us.

“Two of our final three games are at home and every person who comes through the gate will make a difference.

“The club hasn’t won a league title since 1991 and we want to end the wait.”
