The Fenmen chief needs to bring in a new number one following the retirement of record-breaking Paul Bastock at the end of the club’s United Counties League Premier Division promotion-winning campaign.

Setchell revealed he has identified his top target and is hopeful of completing a deal soon as Wisbech prepare for life in the Northern Premier League Division One East.

“It’s a key position and it’s vital we bring in the right man,” said Setchell. “Paul leaves a big hole and we have to make sure we get a good goalkeeper on board.

“I’ve got someone in mind and I’ve already had a chat with him. We’ll see how things progress.”

Striker – and occasional full-back – Josh Ford is the only other confirmed departure so far. Setchell admitted he can’t offer the former Holbeach and Spalding man the regular football he wants.

“Josh always plays with a smile on his face and his versatility was very valuable to us,” continued Setchell. “But he is at the stage of his career where he wants to be playing up front regularly and I can’t guarantee him that.

“I’m still waiting on decisions from some other current players and I’ll hopefully get them pretty soon.

“We’re looking to bring three or four new faces in. We need to add lads who are young and hungry.

“They also tend to cost less than the more experienced players with the good CVs and it’s important we get as much value as possible out of our budget.

“It’s a bit of a rat-race at the moments with lots of clubs all chasing the same sort of players.”
