Outwell Swifts have withdrawn their first team from the Kershaw Premier Division.
The Swifts, who finished in 12th in the Cambs League’s top division last season, today (August 3) confirmed in a statement on Facebook that the club’s reserves will now become the first team in the Mead, Plant & Grab Division 4B.
The club’ secretary, Dave Rawson, also criticised the way in which some of the division’s other clubs pay their players for competing at Step 7 level.
He said: “After confirming with the relevant bodies we are saddened, disappointed and frustrated to announce the withdrawal of our first team from the Kershaw Premier Division of the Cambs League.
“I, as secretary, and a few others have lost blood, sweat and tears over the last few years to produce a club with a high ranking first team and a steady reserves.
“We, along with the village hall and playing field, provide a great facility decent pitch and everything a club needs to compete in any league. Those players that have moved on to a higher standard then fair play and good luck. The wasted talent that can’t be bothered or spit out their dummy then no club deserves your signature.
“We will continue this season with our reserves now becoming the first team in Division Four of the Cambs League. We as a committee and club will strive to provide young and old players in the village a place to play and also welcome the upcoming youths when they reach 16.
“I’m a broken man to have to write this but with the club’s centenary around the corner we will continue, even if I have to put a kit on myself .
“Take a look around you is my message to all local clubs and think about the ethos of the game before you start offering over-weight drunken so called superstars pay to play.”
The Swifts had recently named their new managerial staff – Ashley Doncaster and Connor Young – following the departure of Mark Secker at the end of last season.
