BILLY SMITH'S 19th-minute strike helped move Wisbech out of the relegation zone.

Striker Darren Jimson started Saturday's match, playing his first competitive game for Wisbech for 22 months, after returning from Soham Town Rangers on Thursday, and he played a part in the goal.

The 30-year-old flicked on goalkeeper Alex Street's long kick and Smith ran on to a defender's under-hit back pass to finish confidently.

Mid-table Stanway came back strongly in the second half but Wisbech held out for the win.

Street made several fine saves, including a one-on-one from point-blank range.

The win moved Wisbech one point ahead of Woodbridge, who lost 2-1 at Walsham-le-Willows on Saturday.

The match saw Darren's brother Mark Jimson return to the Wisbech midfield after a long-term knee injury and new signing Kieran Doherty came on in midfield for the last 20 minutes.

Wisbech have also re-signed veteran striker Darren Edey who missed Saturday's match with a back injury but may be available for this Saturday's trip to Harwich and Parkeston.

Wisbech player-manager Gary Setchell said: "It was a very good performance from the boys. Both sides created chances but we deserved to win it.

"It's great to have Darren Jimson back at the club. He has not been playing too regularly for Soham recently so was a bit rusty, but he should be back to his best in the next couple of weeks.

"To have Mark Jimson back and playing again is a massive boost. It's like another new signing. Kieran Doherty is an experienced Ridgeons League player and he did well for us when he came on and Darren Edey is a great character to have in the dressing room. His experience will really help the lads.
