WISBECH Town went goal crazy last night as they booked their place in the Ridgeons League Challenge Cup Final with a thrilling 6-2 win at Stowmarket Town.
The Fenmen’s 16-year wait for silverware looked in jeopordary when the hosts took a shock lead but talented midfielder Callum Reed equalised with a fine curling effort just before the half-hour mark.
First division Stowmarket scored again to take a 2-1 lead into the interval but Steve Appleby’s side absolutely dominated the game after the break to end any lingering doubts of a cup shock.
Andy Furnell equalised, Reed added his second to put Wisbech in front, before sub Darren Jimson got in on the act to ease the Fenmen’s nerves.
Reed capped a virtuoso display by completing his hat-trick before adding his fourth, and Wisbech’s sixth, in the final few minutes.
The thrilling victory saw the Fenmen reach their first league cup final for 16 years and their second final of Appleby’s short managerial reign. Last year his side lost 3-1 against Mildenhall Town in the Cambs Invitation Cup Final.
Wisbech will face Wroxham for the fourth time this season in the final after they beat CRC 2-0 in the night’s other semi.
The Yachtsmen have yet to taste defeat against Wisbech this season and have already enjoyed cup success against the Fenmen, dumping them out of the FA Vase in November.
The final will be played on Monday May 2 but a venue is still to be decided although it’s thought the fixture may be played at Diss Town’s ground.
