Wisbech Town jumped off the bottom of the Northern Premier League Division One East table on a Saturday to savour.

Strike ace Michael Frew hit a hat-trick as the fantastic Fenmen claimed a first league success since September by blowing away Ossett United at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium.

The 4-1 triumph, which also featured a goal from fellow frontman Toby Hilliard, launched Gary Setchell’s side up six places in the standings.

Delighted boss Setchell said: “Ossett are one of the big-hitters in this league and you could see they have some outstanding players.

“But we felt we could get at them which is why we opted to go with a front three and that worked really well for us.

“There can be a lot of negativity around a football club when it is bottom of the table, but we’ve really kicked on lately.

“We’re doing extra training, the lads have bought into what we are asking of them, and we’re working harder than other teams. We created chances and we scored some good goals on a really good day for us.

“We know we’re punching slightly above our weight at this level and that we’re still involved in a relegation battle, but we gave supporters a taste of what we can do over the next 18 months if we’re able to keep this group of players fit and together.

“Michael will no doubt get the headlines for his hat-trick, but everyone involved in that performance was excellent.

“The other attacking players did well, the midfielders worked their socks off and the back four defended like lions.

“We’ve already played a lot of the top teams and we have a lot of games against sides around us in our part of the table to come.”

A high-scoring home success didn’t look likely when Wisbech fell behind to a Marcus Day strike for Ossett, but the Fenmen produced a fine response with a devastating spell of three goals in the space of four minutes.

Hilliard levelled after being set up by another early-season signing for King’s Lynn, Eoin McQuaid, before Frew bagged a quickfire brace. He rifled in a pinpoint Jack Keeble cross for his first goal before heading in a Danny Setchell delivery.

And Frew sealed the points when completing his perfect hat-trick 20 minutes into the second half by finding the net with his left foot.

Ossett attempted to respond but were unable to break through a stubborn Fenmen defence still featuring skipper Jon Fairweather, who has snubbed a switch to Division One East rivals Spalding.

While Wisbech were able to celebrate a first win in 10 league games, the victory actually stretched their unbeaten run to three matches as it followed away draws at Brighouse and Gresley.

Wisbech are without a game this Saturday but then face the two teams currently directly below them in the table as they host Carlton on December 15 and go to Frickley on December 22.
