TALENTED midfielder Callum Reed has hit out at claims that his move to Wisbech Town from Stamford showed a lack of ambition – because he believes the Fenmen are a bigger club.

Reeds departure from Evo-Stick Division One South side Stamford caused a massive stir on the The Daniels message board with many claiming the 20-year-old had taken a backwards step in his career.

However, the former Peterborough United youngster insists his decision to step down one level to join the Fenmen will eventually pay dividends.

Reed said: Stamford may be at a level higher but I think Wisbech are a bigger club.

Theres the new ground, a bigger fanbase and the players and manager are all just as ambitious as me.

Yes Ive dropped down a level but the club want to kick-on and progress and thats one of the main reasons I joined because Stamford gave me a lot of empty promises.

I have played at a good level but Steve Appleby impressed me with his desire to keep moving up the leagues and I want to be part of helping this club progress.

Reed also dismissed rumours that he joined the club for financial reasons.

I was offered more money to go to other clubs so joining Wisbech had nothing to do with money, said Reed, who scored a contender for goal of the season at Wivenhoe Town in his second appearance.

I noticed how brilliant the team spirit is straight away. The banter is great and Ive settled in really quickly because of it.

Ive enjoyed myself so far and believe I can bring something different to the side because I like to get on the ball, get us playing and add some energy.

Ive been impressed with the standard of the players so far although Lunny (Matt Lunn) has stood out. Hes been brilliant in the games Ive played.

Fenmen boss Steve Appleby believes Reeds arrival has boosted his ever-improving squad.

He said: Callums a cracking player and a great lad who wants to develop and help this club progress.

We need people like Callum around and its great when players of his standard buy into what were trying to do.
