RIDGEONS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

Wisbech Town 5 Haverhill Rovers 1

WISBECH banged in five goals by the 56th minute to claim their biggest win of the season.

The result is all the more impressive considering Haverhill are four places above the Fenmen in ninth.

Wisbech boss Roy McManus said: "This was a tremendous performance - it's right up there with our wins at Wroxham and Stanway.

"Haverhill have been in and around the top six all season and I don't think they played badly. They kept fighting throughout but we blitzed them with some wonderful football - particularly at the start of the second half."

Mark Jimson put the Fenmen 1-0 up after 18 minutes.

The ball bounced around the penalty area after a throw-in and Jimson chased his own kick into the danger area and lobbed a header over the outrushing goalkeeper.

Stuart Cobb doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time.

The striker was left unmarked and volleyed home from six yards after Jason Pease's corner.

Jimson's second goal made it 3-0, two minutes into the second half.

After a passage of play on the left wing, Pease crossed into the box, and after the goalkeeper got a finger tip to Cobb's lobbed effort Jimson smashed in from close range at the back post.

Five minutes later Billy Smith latched on to Scott Cubberley's through-ball and raced half the length of the pitch before calmly slotting home.

And in the 56th minute Smith ran in from the left wing, skilfully beat the full-back and cut the ball back from the touchline to leave Darren Edey with a simple finish from close range.

Marcus Hunt scored a penalty for Haverhill deep in stoppage time.

McManus said: "We'd talked a lot in training about crisp and passing and moving after the disappointing performance against Walsham the previous weekend and the lads did that brilliantly."

Wisbech were due to play Harwich and Parkeston in the league on Easter Monday but the match was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

A new fixture date is to be arranged.

The Fenmen do not play again until April 5, when they travel to Walsham-le-Willows for a league game.

McManus said: "After a win like that you want to get straight back out and play straight away so it's a bit frustrating, to say the least."

Midfielder Stuart Ablett will be suspended for the match but McManus is otherwise expecting to have a full squad to choose from.
