Wisbech Town have breathed new life into their season thanks to a two fine cup triumphs in the space of four days.

The Fenmen booked their place in the quarter-finals of the United Counties League KO Cup quarter-finals courtesy of a penalty shoot-out triumph against Premier Division table-toppers Leicester Nirvana last Saturday.

Goalkeeper Aaron Butcher was the Wisbech hero as he saved two spot-kcks and scored one before captan Jon Fairweather guided home the decisive effort to clinch a 5-4 triumph from 12 yards after a goalless deadlock.

And Brett Whaley’s men followed up another impressive knockout triumph on Tuesday night when claiming the higher-level scalp of Soham Town Rangers with a 3-1 win to reach the semi-finals of the Cambs Invitation Cup. Wisbech fell behind midway through the first half before quick goals from Adam Millson and Michael Frew put them ahead. Chris Bacon sealed their passage late on.

Whaley said: “They are two excellent results which have given everyone a boost.

“We knew it would take time to build a squad capable of challenging for the league title and we are getting ourselves into a position to do that next season.

“Cup competitions are a massive part of this season and to still be going strong in two of them is very pleasing.

“Winning a cup or two could be the difference between an okay season and a good one.”

Wisbech will now entertain lower-level Olney in the next round of the League KO Cup while the Cambs Invitaton Cup last-four draw is still to be made.

Cambridge City, who play two levels higher than the Fenmen, and Hardwick and Fulbourn, who play two levels lower, are also through.

Now Whaley wants his side to end 2015 on a high with a stack of Premier Division points.

He has set a 10-point target for their final four league fixtures of the year - a run which starts with a visit to Desborough on Saturday at 3pm.

The Fenmen also go to Harrowby (December 19) and rock-bottom Huntingdon (December 28) either side of entertaining title-chasers Holbeach on Boxing Day.

Whaley added: “We’ve dropped to 11th in the league table and that is not an acceptable position to be in.

“The target has always been a top-six finish for this season and that has not changed. We need to start climbing the table by picking up plenty of points before the end of the year.

“Desborough and Harrowby are not easy places to go by any means, but they are the sort of fixtures we must win to get to where we want to be.

“Holbeach will obviously provide a massive test on Boxing Day, but we owe them one after they knocked us out of the FA Cup. And we also owe Huntingdon one as well after being one of only two teams to lose to them this season.”
