A STUNNING performance from Wisbech Town saw them thump neighbours Ely City 6-1 in the Ridgeon's Premier League last night.

It was the Fenmen's third successive league victory and helps ease fears of relegation.

Manager Gary Setchell was full of praise after the result, but said they were, eventually, going to come.

He said: "We have been playing well but losing, but we got a result against Stanway and that's raised the confidence in the lads.

"We felt Ely was going to be a battle because they've picked up some good results recently, but we were excellent."

Wisbech were 4-0 up at half-time, with goals from Stuart Ablett, Paul Cousins, Billy Smith and Scott Cubberley.

Ablett rounded the keeper and a defender to slot home, before Cousins headed home an Ablett cross.

Smith scored from close range, before Cubberley slotted home from a Smith cross.

Wisbech made it five almost immediately after half-time, when Smith again crossed for Cubberley to finish.

Ely scored a consolation from a set piece, but late on Smith chased a lost cause and scored his second of the night.

The attention now turns to Saturday's home clash against rock-bottom Haverhill Rovers - but Setchell is not going to take them for granted after they picked up a 1-1 draw at league leaders Lowestoft Town on Saturday.

"They've just had a fantastic result and are on a bit of an upturn, so will come here and give it a go," he said.

"But we have put ourselves in a much better position than we were a few weeks ago and, if we keep it up, should easily pull away from the relegation zone."

Before the game, teams held a minute's silence in memory of Denis 'Goalbound' Harris who died at the weekend aged 73.

The team dedicated last night's win - and Saturday's victory against Harwich and Parkeston - to Goalbound.
