FOR the second time in five months, Wisbech and Boston United could not be separated, but this time the Fenmen looked a more impressive outfit.

On recent league form many expected that Wisbech would struggle to compete with the Blue Square North side.

But with the pressure off, the Wisbech players relaxed and played free-flowing football.

A superb 25-yard Scott Cubberley strike put Wisbech 1-0 up after 20 minutes.

After a neat passage of play a near-post corner was cleared out of the box before Cubberley smashed the ball into the top corner, leaving former Manchester United academy goalkeeper Lee Crockett with little chance.

Boston equalised with a penalty just after the hour mark.

Wisbech skipper Lee Day slipped in his own penalty area and was adjudged to have clipped the heels of Paul Alexander on his way down.

Alexander confidently placed the spot-kick in the bottom right corner of the net.

Both sides were applauded off the pitch by a crowd who were well entertained by a fine evening of open football.

Wisbech boss Roy McManus said: "Any spectator watching the match who didn't know the two sides would have shocked to learn of the difference in leagues that we play in. If anything, we were the stronger side.

"The work-rate was superb but we also played some very good pass-and-move football - it just showed what we are capable of.

"We have a couple of crucial league games coming up with Harwich and Parkeston at home on Saturday and Newmarket away the following weekend, and if we can re-produce this sort of form we should win them both.
