HOT prospect Jordan Gill is set to put Chatteris back on the boxing map after agreeing a deal to turn professional next summer.

Gill will follow in the footsteps of his idol Prince Naseem Hamed when he signs for Sheffield’s Ingle Boxing after turning 18 next July.

The Chatteris Amateur Boxing Club ace, who has already won a British title, will become Chatteris’ first professional boxer since Dave ‘Boy’ Green retired in 1981.

Gill said: “It’s always been a dream to turn professional because boxing is my life.

“I’ve grown up around it so this chance means everything to me. I can’t wait and I’m absolutely buzzing for it.

“When I was little I used to watch Naseem Hamed and put on my sister’s leopard skin skirt and pretend I was him!

“I’ve only ever wanted to be a boxer.

“My style suits the pro-game as amateur boxing is like a race and I like to box clever – this all feels like a natural development I’m meant to take.”

Hamed, Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham and Junior Witter are just some of the iconic names who have learnt their trade under legendary trainer Brendan and his sons Dominic and John Ingle.

Gill has already sparred with Kell Brook and Kid Galahad at St Thomas’ Boys & Girls Club Gym in Wincobank, Sheffield, and will continue to train there until he can sign the deal.

The Chatteris star, who thanked his mum, dad and friends in helping his career flourish, said: “The names who have been through the gym are incredible and I know I’ll be a little fish in a big pond to start off with but that doesn’t faze me.

“I can’t wait to get up there but for now I just want to get my head down and finish my A-levels, keep winning my bouts and improve as a boxer.”

Ingle Boxing

Impressing the Ingles

BRENDAN Ingle has been training boxers out of the St Thomas’ Boys & Girls Club Gym in Wincobank, Sheffield, since the 60s.

A host of greats have learnt their trade under Ingle, awarded an MBE in 1998 for his contribution to British boxing, and his sons Dominic and John.

Brendan’s friendship with Paul saw Jordan spar at the club as a 14-year-old.

Dominic said: “We saw potential in Jordan instantly. He doesn’t have a classic amateur style so the pro-game will suit him – he’s a clever kid.

“Paul deserves credit for bringing Jordan to this level and realising he needs to take a step back to let him progress.”

Jordan’s dad, Paul

Inspiring a new era

JORDAN’S dad and coach, Paul, believes his son’s impending deal could inspire a new generation of professional boxers in Fenland.

He said: “Amir Khan inspired a whole new era of boxers when he came through and maybe Jordan could do the same around here.

“This news is good for Chatteris and Fenland as it will bring money and prosperity to the district. Eric Boon and Dave ‘Boy’ Green brought a lot of excitement to the area and now maybe Jordan will do the same.

“Jordan deserves it because he’s been so dedicated.”

Paul, who has been involved with Chatteris ABC since 1986, praised promoter Matty Payne for his role in Jordan’s progression.
