Cup-final heartache beckons for injured Wisbech Town skipper Paul Cousins
DISTRAUGHT Wisbech Town captain Paul Cousins has admitted he’ll need a miracle to be fit in time for his side’s cup final.
The inspirational centre-back limped out of Saturday’s 2-0 win at FC Clacton before half time after tearing his groin.
Cousin’s worst fears were realised when he visited a physio on Tuesday night who confirmed he could be sidelined for a minimum of four weeks.
The 28-year-old is now almost certain to miss the Fenmen’s Ridgeons League Challenge Cup Final against Wroxham on May 2.
Cousins said: “I wanted to walk my hometown club out at that final. I’ve been thinking about lifting that trophy we’ve been waiting 16 years to win.
“I’ll cheer the boys on but I’m heartbroken that I won’t be able to play my part in it all.
“I cleared a header and I just felt my groin rip. Straight away I knew it was a serious one and my first thought was ‘I’m going to miss the cup final’. I’m absolutely distraught.

“I’ll be doing everything in my power to push myself to be fit even if it’s not looking promising for me.
“I’ve played through the pain so many times - with knocks, broken bones and stitches - but unless this heals dramatically there’s no chance I’ll play. If I could – I would.
“You play all season to get to a cup final and now it looks like I’ve had that chance taken away from me. It’s every footballer’s worst nightmare.”
Goals from Callum Reed and Ash Stevens stretched Wisbech’s unbeaten league run to five games on Saturday. They host Felixstowe & Walton United tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).
