Captain Gary Freear has challenged his Wisbech players to end the Cambs & Hunts Premier League season on a high and to prove they want to be part of the team next summer.

Wisbech remain third in Whiting & Partners Division One after a 79-run success at Godmanchester Town last Saturday.

It was a fourth win in their last five games and featured a classy 82 from Josh Bowers as Wisbech reached 178 on a difficult wicket.

A second five-wicket haul of the summer from Jamie Gollands then helped to skittle the hosts for just 99. Gollands took 5-20 but his skipper admitted that return was more down to poor batting than expert bowling.

Freear was more impressed with the displays of young bowlers Will Gowler and Jonathan Garner, who grabbed a couple of wickets apiece.

Freear said: “We’re not going to win the league so the rest of the season is all about playing for pride.

“We need players to perform at their best week in, week out and show us that they want to be part of the team next season.

“Josh batted superbly on a very average wicket at Godmanchester. People there seemed to think our score of 178 was somewhat below par, but the fact we bowled them out for 99 suggests it wasn’t the case at all.

“I’m sure Jamie won’t mind me saying he didn’t bowl very well at all – it was more a case of Godmanchester batsmen playing terrible shots.”

Wisbech entertain Waresley tomorrow at Harecroft Road, 12.30pm.

Wisbech are also closing in on a first Rutland League Division One title.

They boast a 53-point cushion at the top of the standings with only four matches remaining in the Sunday competition.

The side, skippered by Dom Stannard, breezed to a seven-wicket success at reigning champions Nassington in their latest fixture – easily surpassing the hosts’ effort of 128 as Ali Anthony hit an unbeaten 63.

Wisbech go to Bourne this Sunday, 1pm.

• A stunning innings boosted Wisbech 2nds’ hopes of Cambs Senior League Division One survival last Saturday. Daniel Jones cracked an unbeaten 153 in a 145-run drubbing of Fulbourn Institute.
