Wisbech were left frustrated by the wet weather last Saturday when coming within six balls of beating the Cambs & Hunts Premier League leaders.

Gary Freear’s men were 77-3 in pursuit of Ketton’s posting of 183-9 when the heavens opened at Harecroft Road, bringing the Whiting & Partners Division One clash to an early halt.

Wisbech were 19 overs into their reply and would have triumphed on a superior run rate had a 20th over have been completed.

“It’s frustrating to come so close to winning, even though I’m not a fan of the rule about run rate,” admitted Freear.

“It absolutely hammered it down so I can’t complain at the decision of the umpires to bring us off.

“We both got 13 points so we’ve not lost any ground on the leaders, but Ramsey and Saffron Walden were the beneficiaries as they got full games in and picked up maximum points.”

Overseas ace Parth Patel was the star performer for Wisbech with a first five-wicket haul on these shores. He bagged 5-31.

Wisbech’s three chief run-scorers – Freear, Josh Bowers and Danny Haynes – had all departed when their reply was cut short.

“Parth bowled very well,” added Freear. “He’s not quick by any stretch, but hits a good area on a wicket that was a bit slower than usual.”

Wisbech host a struggling Godmanchester Town side tomorrow, 12.30pm start.

A career-best haul from Jamie Gollands helped Wisbech continue their perfect start to the Rutland League season last Sunday.

Leg-spinner Gollands bagged 6-41 in a four-wicket win against Barnack. Wisbech actually made pretty hard work of surpassing a target of 161, losing a flurry of cheap wickets.

Captain Dom Stannard hit 50 and Josh Bowers remained unbeaten on 54, with Freear also hitting 19no to see them across the finish line.

“There are a few teams who take it very seriously on a Sunday, but we just like to enjoy ourselves,” added Freaar.

“We’re picking up results although we didn’t play particularly well against Barnack.

“We ended up playing some silly shots and I had to come out of the scorebox, where I was having a nice rest, to see us home.”

Wisbech host reigning champions Nassington this Sunday, 1pm.
