Creasey calls it a day

WISBECH Town manager Dick Creasey has resigned from the club.

Speculation about Creasey's future has been rife in recent weeks and as previously reported in the Wisbech Standard, large budget cuts for next season have proved to be a deciding factor.

Creasey, pictured, said: "I stepped down this morning after giving it a lot of thought. I wanted to stay at the club but I couldn't see it working.

"I don't think I was in a position to work with the budget cuts and it was the right time to go.

"There is no bad feeling between me and the club and I am not pointing the finger at anyone. I know that the club has to work within a budget and take the move to a new ground into consideration.

"I have been at the club for two-and-a-half years and it has been fantastic. I have received great support from the club and the supporters have been fantastic.

"There were times when we took more fans to away games than we were getting at Fenland Park and our FA Cup run was something I will remember for a long time.

"It has been a privilege to work at the club and I want to thank everyone. I can walk away from the club with my head held high knowing that I gave it my best shot."

Wisbech Town chairman John Petch said: "I am very sorry to see Dick go but I want to thank him for all that he has done for the club."

Currently, Petch does not have a replacement in mind but he has indicated that some things at the club will have to change. He said: "We will have to become a local side and develop our youth policy. Other clubs have done that successfully and we will have to follow in their footsteps."

Creasey also believes that a local manager should replace him at the helm of the club. He said: "Wisbech Town needs a local person who knows the area and its players."

The search for a new manager begins today with a meeting of the Wisbech Town board of directors.
