From the moment a pin-drop was heard amid a packed audience, you knew something important was going to happen soon.

Each fighter, including Chatteris star Jordan Gill, who headlines the first event of his career tomorrow (Saturday), was laser-focused as they took to their seats in front of the media and boxing fans at the Marriott Hotel in Peterborough on Thursday afternoon.

There was no respite to be had with each competitor discussing how tomorrow’s big show - held at the East of England Arena and screened live by Sky Sports - can become a platform for progress as they look to make the next step towards their development.

Gill, who fights for the WBA International title, was composed and cautious when sharing his thoughts with Mexican opponent Emmanuel Dominguez only a couple of seats away, who believes he is capable of causing an upset in his first bout on British soil.

“I always try and keep a cool head because I’ve got to save my energy for the ring,” said Gill, who was certainly not in the mood to throw any punches.

“You have to be a little nervous to perform well and hopefully I can do that on Saturday if it all goes to plan.”

The unbeaten Fenland featherweight was excited when envisaging the atmosphere, with around 1,000 tickets sold by Gill’s side alone.

One key reason why Gill became more recognised, in his opinion, was the comfortable victory over then Commonwealth champion Ryan Doyle last October, and the fact this is a homecoming event makes this battle even more special for him.

“It means the world,” Gill enthused. “We’ve sold huge numbers of tickets and I’m over the moon to put on a show for them and provide some entertainment.

“I’ve never felt like this before and know it’s going to be a special night.

“I’m only 24 years old and already in the position that I’m in. The world is my oyster and I can carry on improving the way I am.

“It’s not hard to keep level-headed because I know as quick as it (the opportunity) comes, it can go.

“All I’m doing is focusing on the fight, not looking past the opponent and making sure I prepare well and put in a performance.”

Not only that, but if he reigns supreme for the 23rd time as a professional, there could be yet more memorable occasions for local fight fans.

“We’ve sold a lot of tickets, so if I win there’s a good chance that we’ll be coming back very regularly to Peterborough, which would be amazing for the area,” Gill added.

“There are a lot of boxing fans here and people that aren’t boxing fans are coming and hopefully turn into boxing fans.

“It’s good for me and it’s good for all the local fighters because they get an opportunity to perform on the big stage.

“I’m sure everyone is going to go home happy.”
