EASTERN COUNTIES DIVISION ONE

Wisbech 24 Cantabs 0

WISBECH warmed up for tomorrow's EDF Energy Vase clash at Pegasus Palmerians with a confident performance.

A Jacques Steynberg try straight from the kick off underlined the type of game that Wisbech wanted to play.

Cantabs kicked off, Ben Hoyles caught it and fed along the backs to James Napier as he accelerated into the line from full-back and slipped the ball onto Steynberg who finished in the corner.

James Comben crossed the line in the eighth minute only for the try to be disallowed for putting a foot in touch.

Wisbech went 12-0 up before half-time when Charlie Roberts' perfect line-out picked out Andy Hoyles and he fed scrum-half Will Petitt before receiving the ball again at pace to score a fine try and Petitt converted.

The second half was a more scrappy affair and the Wisbech forwards continued to gain hard yards.

Their efforts were rewarded in the 55th minute after a series of mauls close to the Cantabs line saw the home side cross over and second row and Ben Chapman emerged with the ball and a wide smile indicating that he'd just scored his first try for the club and 17-0 lead.

Wisbech won a penalty close to the visitors' line and ran for the line with Tom Martell burrowing through for the last try of the match.

Despite tries from Andy Heighton, Marcus Ringwood and Raimus Wisbech's second team lost 45-15 at Norwich seconds in the Norfolk Merit League Division One on Saturday.

Wisbech seconds entertain March in a local derby at Harecroft Road tomorrow.
