Wisbech fighter Joe Steed came through his first test as a pro boxer with flying colours - and can’t wait for the next time.

The 20-year-old won all four rounds of his opener against the durable Danny Little, to the delight of a noisy Wisbech contingent in the crowd at Norwich’s Holiday Inn North.

The benefits of training in East Anglia’s leading boxing gym were clear from the moment Steed stepped into the ring. His work was composed, quick, varied and accurate.

“Punch perfect,” was the verdict of trainer Graham Everett, who is responsible for British champions past and present like Liam and Ryan Walsh, Sam Sexton and Jon Thaxton, who now works in the ProBox Norwich gym and was in Steed’s corner.

“I felt relaxed even though I was really excited about it,” said Steed. “But I felt good in there.

“I went in relaxed and couldn’t wait to get the job done and I thought I boxed well. I didn’t get involved in a scrap.

“He was tough, a real game opponent. I was hitting him with everything I could but he wouldn’t budge. But he is a very experienced boxer and he knows his way around the ring.”

Steed was first up on the dinner show in Norwich and was greeted by excellent travelling support from the Fens.

“There were loads of fans who came down and that really helps,” added Steed. “Hopefully when I fight next there will be even more – I can’t wait to get back into the gym and then back in the ring.”

That’s likely to be July, but Steed earned himself a few days rest before resuming the long round trip to Norwich on Wednesday to work under the watchful eyes of Everett and Thaxton and take advantage of the high-class stable of fighters.

“It’s been brilliant being able to work with Jon and Graham and sparring with the Walsh twins and Nathan Dale - it makes those trips more than worthwhile.”

Everett was happy with Steed – and happy his charge has got that opener out of the way to get up and running.

“I was really pleased with Joe,” said Everett. “It was an accomplished performance.

“His performance was really punch perfect – he jabbed well, he switched to the body well against a good, experienced fighter who you could see was tieing him up and messing him around, but he did well.”
