TWO Fenland boxers have been selected to represent England.

Charlie Stevens, from March ABC, and Chatteris ABC's Jordan Gill impressed selectors in their national Royal Navy Golden Gloves final matches at Knottingley, West Yorkshire, on Saturday.

The pair will represent England in the Tri Nations, which start on April 11 and take place in Sheffield.

Stevens, 12, from Upwell, was crowned 40kg champion after Jack Woods, from Wednesbury ABC, failed to come out for the third round.

Woods was unable to cope with the pace of Stevens' attack.

He landed several clean, straight shots to the head and body.

Coach Bernie Wing said: "Charlie has been boxing for just 18 months and this was only his seventh bout so his progress has been incredible.

"His dedication to training is very impressive and he looks to be a great prospect for the future."

Gill, 13, lost his 52kg final to Kirkby ABC powerhouse Michael Jolson.

The Chatteris puncher was competing in the finals for the second successive year.

He lost to Dave Preece last March.

Gill was surprised to come away 4-2 down after boxing well in the first round.

Jolson dominated the second round, extending his lead to 9-2, leaving Gill no choice but to go for a final-round knock out.

But in doing so, Gill left himself exposed, was given a standing eight-count and eventually lost 14-3.

Coach Paul Gill said: "I was really proud of Jordan. I knew there were national selectors their so the pressure was really on but it's the best performance I've seen from him.

"Jolson is a big, strong lad, and Jordan was giving a lot away in terms of size and reach but he's done himself proud.

"He's now got some fascinating challenges ahead of him and I'm hoping he will go on to compete in the Olympics. He's just the right age for 2012."

He added: "I want to thank Cromwell Community College for all the support they have given Jordan. They have really helped his fitness with sports training before and after school."

n Stevens and Gill are fighting again tonight (Friday) when March ABC hold an Open Show at the Braza Club.

Stevens' opponent is to be confirmed while Gill takes on Frankie Smith from Gilford.

Chatteris ABC's Chris Brown faces a tough test against former ABA semi-finalist Hammed Javed from St. Ives for the Mid-Anglia Light Welterweight title, and his club-mate Joseph Payne will be fighting for the Light Welterweight title.

Seventeen bouts have been scheduled but the show is sold out.
