WISBECH Rugby Club are preparing for what is expected to be one of their toughest tests of the season against Canvey Island at home.

The Fenland club had a superb 30-18 derby win at West Norfolk on Saturday but head coach Steve Drawbridge has warned against complacency ahead of Saturday's fixture against one of the London Division Three North East favourites.

He said: "It was an excellent derby match. We played some great stuff in the first half but became a bit complacent in the second.

"There are sides in this division that will punish you for that and Canvey Island are certainly one of them. There is no doubt that we will have to be at our very best to get anything."

Like Wisbech, the Essex club have won both of their opening matches of the season.

They beat South Woodham Ferrers 33-21 at home on Saturday.

Wisbech found themselves 12-3 down to West Norfolk after just 13 minutes but overwhelmed their neighbours with a 20-minute purple patch to take a 25-12 half-time lead and virtually kill the game off.

A Shane Vickers kick put Wisbech 3-0 up but two tries, one of which was converted, gave the hosts a nine-point lead by the time Tom Martell was sin binned on 16 minutes.

This proved to be a catalyst for Wisbech to up the pace and hooker Nat Humphreys scored a try after a driven maul following a line-out.

The next score culminated after a searing break by scrum-half Andy Claydon and a swift pass to skipper Tom Long who finished well and Vickers' conversion made it 15-12 to Wisbech.

Rudi Van de Merwe's run put Tom Martell into space and he straightened the line and fed Will Pettit to make it 20-12 on 26 minutes.

Pettit secured his brace after Vickers took a free-kick quickly, Long delayed his pass to perfection for Vickers to complete the first half scoring and for a 25-12 lead at half time, the conversion attempt going wide.

West Norfolk, assisted by sin-binning of David Wadsley, made a bright start to the second half and two penalty kicks reduced Wisbech's lead to seven points.

But Wisbech pulled away when Pettit seized upon a loose ball, changed the direction of play and passed to substitute Ben Wicks who put Van de Merwe in to score.

Vickers hit the post with the conversion, but a 30-18 lead was the result and ultimately a well deserved final score.

Drawbridge said: "I want to pay tribute to Luke Feaviour, in the coaching staff. His work with the front five is really paying off."

Saturday's match starts at 3pm.
