Wisbech Town will look to get back to winning ways this weekend after their Tucker Gardner Division One title charge was dented on Bank Holiday Monday by the league’s in-form outfit, Ramsey.

Sam Albutt’s men went into the tie on the back of a fine eight-wicket win over Godmanchester just two days before, but came unstuck against a Ramsey side whose form has seen them rise to the top of the division.

Wisbech won the toss and elected to bat first, but were soon made to rue their decision when Ramsey’s Leighton Gilbert caught Danny Haynes off a Blake Mills delivery for a duck.

Skipper Sam Albutt followed soon after when he was bowled by Mark Edwards after chalking up four runs.

Gary Freear restored some stability at the crease with 28, but Wisbech’s run-scoring import, Jack Hargreaves, fell short of his usual performances and was dismissed by Mills for 14.

Rhys Howell was sent walking back to the pavillion without scoring a run, before Jamie Gollands restored some parity at number six.

Gollands fell six runs short of a half-century off of 51 balls to give his side a fighting chance of salvaging a respectable total, before he was caught off a Jon Cade delivery.

Jason Esser added to Wisbech’s sub-par batting performance after he was trapped LBW by Elliott Cafferkey for a duck, and Paul Edgellar, Shane Sheath, Silas Mutubaki and Brodie Ellis were only able to add 39 runs between them as Wisbech were dismissed for 163 after 40.5 overs.

Wisbech’s lacklustre display continued with the ball, with Ramsey losing only three wickets as they reached 171 after 30.1 overs.

Ellis, Freear and Mutubaki shared one wicket apiece but were powerless to halt Ramsey’s Taylor West and Michael Cafferkey, who notched 53* and 42 respectively.

A second defeat of a promising campaign for Wisbech sees them fall to fourth in the league standings, and the Fenland side will hope to bounce back at home to Histon tomorrow afternoon.

Elsewhere, Gary Freear hit a magnificent 112 as Wisbech were held to a tie with Bourne in the Rutland League.

Two wickets each for Harry Drew, Thomas Dunning and Jack Hargreaves reduced the hosts to 247-7 after 45 overs, before Freear’s terrific ton and contributions from Danny Haynes (54) and Ali Anthony (44) helped Wisbech to the same total.
