Wisbech Grammar School 1st XV started their 2016 rugby season with a hard fought 14 – 10 victory over Wymondham College.
After a well-balanced opening period, it was Wymondham who broke the deadlock.
A gap in midfield was exploited by the back row resulting in an unconverted try scored under the posts.
This score galvanized Wisbech Grammar School and they moved up the gears for the rest of the half, after providing an immediate response.
Captain Henry Thornton, from Wisbech, rallied the team and put the 1st XV just 10 meters from the Wymondham line with a clever kicking game.
The resulting lineout saw a mix up with the catch and drive, however scrum half Jack Trundley, from King’s Lynn, kicked through before diving on the ball to draw the scores level, with Ollie Mann, from Wimblington, adding the extras.
Wisbech Grammar School gained momentum and it didn’t take long for them to add to their score.
Some excellent tactical rugby gave the side front foot ball just meters from the Wymondham line, and after centre Matt Holden, from Wisbech, pulled in four defenders with a strong carry, it was scrum half Jack Trundley who once again went over, this time with a darting score on the blindside of the ruck.
Ollie Mann added the extra’s to take the score to 14 – 5; which remained the score at half time.
Despite the rain in the second half, Wisbech continued putting Wymondham under pressure repeatedly.
With 15 minutes to go Wymondham scored an unconverted try in the corner, taking the score to 14 – 10 and setting up a nervous finish.
Wisbech stayed calm and halfbacks Jack Trundley and Henry Thornton organised well, keeping Wymondham from any further opportunities.
With some strong defence to finish the game, Wisbech eventually put the ball in touch to record a hard-earned and well deserved 14 – 10 victory to start the season.
