Wisbech Town have ’10 cup finals’ ahead in the chase for United Counties League Premier Division glory.

That’s the view of manager Gary Setchell who reckons the Fenmen are one of five clubs still capable of capturing the crown.

He also believes his side have the toughest run-in of the title candidates. Only two of Wisbech’s remaining games are against teams in the bottom half of the table.

The other eight clashes are all against teams in the top 10, including showdowns against fellow championship hopefuls Newport Pagnell and Holbeach.

Wisbech lost four of their opening six Premier Division games of this season under former boss Dick Creasey, but have slipped up only twice in the 26 league outings since Setchell took over in early September.

And he believes they can only afford to lose one more game if they are to stand a chance of topping the table in May.

Setchell said: “It’s most exciting title race in this league for years. Normally someone runs away with it, yet we still have five teams who could win it this season.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that we have the toughest run-in of those teams, but I also believe we are capable of winning any game on any given day.

“We’ve got 10 cup finals ahead of us and I think we can only afford to drop four points if we’re going to win the league, and six or seven to get promoted.

“We’d love to be champions and go up, but if those things don’t happen we will come back with a clean slate next season.

“It will go down to the wire and it’s going to be great to be a part of it. To be honest it’s remarkable we’re even in the title race after dropping 12 points early on.

“Dick did a great job for Wisbech over the years, but unfortunately they didn’t start well for whatever reason this season.”

Setchell takes his side to Daventry Town this Saturday and is keen to add a couple of new faces to his squad before the signing deadline later this month.

He revealed that recent signing Jamie Thurlbourne has already departed after making just one appearance.
