A THERE were certainly reasons for Wisbech Town supporters to be jolly over the Christmas period thanks to two wins and six valuable points.

Liam Nimmo's first half brace gave the Fenmen a good 2-0 win at local rivals King's Lynn Reserves on Boxing Day, while a late winner from Luke Kennedy earned Wisbech a dramatic 2-1 victory at home to Halstead Town, on Saturday.

The good results were welcomed by manager Dick Creasey, who said: "They are two good wins and if we can continue in the same way over the busy period ahead, the table will certainly change."

He added: "We are in a time of transition at the club and we have got rid of some of the older players and replaced them with youngsters.

"We have also made massive changes to the way we play over the past four or five weeks. I have tried to get the lads to play shorter and pass the ball through midfield.

"We certainly have the players who can do that and we are a much more interesting side to watch but these changes will take time to bed down."

Wisbech put in a professional performance at King's Lynn on Boxing Day and weathered early pressure from the home side.

With only seven minutes played, Wisbech keeper Nick Conroy was forced out of his box to head clear but the ball fell to Seamus Kelleher, who saw his shot hit the bar before the Fenmen defenders scrambled the ball away.

But Wisbech got better and opened the scoring on 25 minutes. Darren Jimson and Liam Nimmo combined nicely before Nimmo tucked the ball away.

Lynn were undone by the same players on the stroke of half time and again, Nimmo produced a good finish following good work with Jimson.

The home side tried to get back into the game in the second half but they came up against a resilient Wisbech defence.

The Fenmen's midfield, in which Luke Kennedy was outstanding, took advantage to control the game and Jimson was unlucky not to score when Lynn keeper Darren Hyde produced a good save in the dying minutes.

Kennedy proved to be the hero for Wisbech on Saturday when his goal with virtually the last kick of the game gave the home team a 2-1 victory against Halstead Town.

Wisbech were the much better side in the first half but a fine display from visiting keeper Paul Rutherford thwarted the Fenmen and Stuart Cobb, Liam Nimmo, Luke Kennedy and Darren Jimson all saw their efforts saved.

It looked like it was going to be a frustrating day for the Fenmen fans when the visitors took an unlikely lead with 20 minutes left.

A swift counter-attack resulted in a goalmouth scramble before Craig Harvey latched onto the loose ball and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the net.

Wisbech continued to push forward and they were rewarded with a deserved equaliser just six minutes later. Appleby and Nimmo combined nicely before Appleby produced a cool finish to record his first goal of the season.

And it proved to be Wisbech's day after all and they picked up the three points with Kennedy's late strike. Darren Jimson's long throw was half-cleared and Luke Kennedy struck a low shot from 20 yards that found the bottom corner.

Creasey said: "I thought that we played quite well against Halstead but we were not good enough in the last third of the pitch and didn't finish our chances.

"But against King's Lynn I thought we knocked the ball around really well. We were very strong in defence and Liam Nimmo took his chances when he got them."

He added: "I have set the lads a target of 10 to 12 points from their games over the Christmas period and we are full of confidence so it is certainly achievable."

On Saturday, Wisbech travel to Lowestoft Town before entertaining Histon Reserves on New Year's Day. Steve Appleby is a doubt for the Lowestoft game after picking up an ankle injury on Saturday.
